Chris’ Cool Cars: The Original Bullitt Mustang
A few years back during the 2018 Detroit Auto Show, Ford revealed the new 2019 Bullitt Edition of the Mustang GT. This was expected and not much of a surprise. However, what was a surprise is that it was accompanied by the long-missing 1968 Mustang used in the filming of the movie Bullitt starring Steve McQueen. As Road & Track put it “That’s a little bit like the Loch Ness monster showing up at an Olympic swim meet.”
There were two cars used in the film. A couple of years prior, the stunt car was discovered in Mexico. The location of this car, the “hero” car, which was driven by McQueen himself as been a mystery for years. The Ford Motor Company and its then owner Sean Keirnan managed to keep a very big secret before the car was once again revealed to the world at the Detroit Auto Show.
But the story didn’t end there. In 2020, the car was sold at Mecum auctions in Scottsdale, Arizona, bringing in the highest sale price of any Mustang ever at public auction… $3.74 Million!
The car has a fascinating history. I won’t go into all the details here, but both Hagerty and Road & Track have some excellent articles on the car. They can be found here…
