This past weekend I hosted a small group of Detail Mafia members for a special Outdoor Leadership Training up in my home town of Big Bear Lake, California. The goal was to help these amazing business owners face their fears and learn to overcome them.
Fear can be paralyzing. It can keep us from taking risks, trying new things, and living our lives to the fullest. But what if I told you that fear is actually essential for your growth and success?
That’s right, fear can actually help you grow as a person. When we face our fears, we learn to overcome them and we build confidence and resilience. We become stronger and more capable. Our weekend consisted of a handful of outdoor adventures, each relatable to the challenges business ownership:
- Off-roading on backcountry trails.
- Building a minimalist shelter and spending the night in it.
- Orienteering as a team using a compass to build navigation skills.
- Mantracking combined with search and rescue technique and skills
- Rough terrain hiking and backpacking
- Repelling off a 30-foot rock to face the ultimate fear.
Facing your fears will help you grown in a number of ways…
- Learn to trust yourself: When you face your fears, you learn that you are capable of more than you thought possible. You learn to trust your instincts and your abilities.
- Build confidence: Every time you face a fear and overcome it, you build your confidence. You start to believe in yourself and your ability to achieve your goals.
- Become more resilient: Facing your fears helps you develop resilience. You learn to bounce back from setbacks and challenges. You become stronger and more determined.
- Become more open to new experiences: When you face your fears, you open yourself up to new experiences. You start to see the world in a new way and you become more willing to take risks.
- Live a more fulfilling life: When you face your fears, you start to live a more fulfilling life. You are no longer held back by your fears. You are free to pursue your dreams and live your life to the fullest.
Of course, facing our fears isn’t always easy. It’s scary and uncomfortable, but it’s worth it. Here are a few tips for facing your fears:
- Start small: Don’t try to tackle your biggest fear all at once. Start with something small that you are still a little bit afraid of. Once you have overcome that fear, you can move on to something bigger.
- Visualize yourself succeeding: Before you face your fear, take some time to visualize yourself succeeding. See yourself in your mind’s eye overcoming your fear and achieving your goal.
- Talk to someone you trust: If you are struggling to face your fear, talk to someone you trust. They can offer support and encouragement.
- Take action: Don’t just sit around and think about facing your fear. Take action. Take small steps towards your goal. The more you take action, the easier it will become.
Fear is a natural human emotion. It’s not something to be ashamed of. But it’s also something that you don’t have to let control your life. When you face your fears, you grow as a person. You become stronger, more confident, and more resilient. So don’t let fear hold you back. Face it head-on and grow!
